Background

On April 1st, 2017, there was a surprise airing of a long awaited new episode of Rick and Morty. The episode featured a sequence about a 1998 McDonalds promotion, which offered "Mulan Szechuan Teriyaki Dipping Sauce", promoting the release of the 1998 Disney Film Mulan. Following the airing, a slew of 'Zigerian' scammers took to eBay to capitalize on the sauce hype, attempting to sell fake sauce-related items. Some of these items were: packets, pictures of packets, screenshots of listings of photos of packets, etc.

Amidst the chaos of fabricated listings, one posted by the mysterious DefinitelyNotDanHarmon reached $100,000 before being taken down due to multiple false reports on the item. Screenshots of the listing can be viewed here. Reports confirming the listing are available from this article and an inverse.com article. Since then, it has surfaced that DefinitelyNotDanHarmon is part of an ARG. We know that he has taken to Reddit and has assembled r/SzechuanSauceSeekers in effort to retake his rightful place as the DEFINITE Unofficial AUTHENTIC sauce distributor on eBay, and to uncover the mystery behind The GOLDEN PACKET. DefinitelyNotDanHarmon has appeared on Reddit, masquerading as a number of users.

On Friday, May 8, 2017 a /u/StrangeManInBlack came into our discord channel causing havok. Posing as a newbie posting what was assumed to be a previous encryption text, presumably looking for answers. After spamming this text and a zip file repeatedly, the strangemaninblack was banished to reddit (temporarily), where he started posting.

This is an obvious viral campaign. Do not try to adjust your monitor. The best way to enjoy this game and solve these puzzles is to start from the beginning and solve them yourself, read the pages linked behind the codes and understand why they are there. The sauce posts are posted on reddit and usually have comments made by either the OP or an alt account that help lead to discovery of the solution. There are also sauce packets available on ebay (100% goes to Habitat for Humanity, ebay verified) which contain clues to future puzzles. Part of the journey is trying to figure out five big questions. Who is DNDH? What is IT? Where? When? Why? IT is coming. The Sauce is a Lie. The Szauce is Much More.

Description

There are a number of posts on the reddit with the tag "Saucepost", which is where most of the puzzles occur with images that contribute. These images often are encrypted and able to be decrypted with enchiper.it or contain QR codes for information. The QR codes often lead to TV Tropes wiki pages which give insight into the back story, or otherwise reveal behind the scenes transcripts and logs of DNDH. However, not all information is contained in these and further research may be found in these Reddit accounts.

NOTE: All of the post titles are clickable and will bring you to the reddit post it is from. It is a good idea to click it if you are stuck or don't really understand it, as there are usually comments that will help provide some revelation.
