Waking Titan (also known as Project WT) is an ARG involving a multitude of websites, phone numbers, and radio stations scattered across the world. The ARG is being produced by veteran puppet masters, and will feature NPCs, actors, and live events.  The ultimate purpose of Waking Titan remains a mystery, but it seems to be somehow connected to No Man's Sky.

Another website was found by searching for 'wakingtitan.com', based on the title of the 404 page on the original site. The website prompted visitors for a username and password.

On 2017-06-01, moderators of No Man's Sky subreddits /r/NoMansSkyTheGame, /r/NMSPortals, and /r/NMSGalacticHub started to receive cassette tapes in the mail.  Each cassette tape was labelled with a number out of 16. The Waking Titan ARG was initially thought to be a separate ARG from these tapes, but connections between the two made it clear that they were, in fact, one and the same.

Throughout the ARG, partial Youtube video addresses for songs have been found written in Waking Titan's memos, websites, and surveys.  While these were never explained, there are apparent thematic relevancies in each song that reflect concepts being explored in the ARG at the time of their appearance.  All of these songs can be found compiled here: WT Season 1; WT Season 2

During Phase 1, the http://wakingtitan.com hosted 6 triangles in the middle of the page.  These triangles were referred to as "Sigils", while the white icons along the bottom of the page were referred to as "Glyphs".  Each sigil and glyph, when clicked, lead to a password entry prompt - the correct passwords for all 6 sigils and the first 5 glyphs were discovered via puzzle-solving during Phase 1 of Waking Titan.
 +

 +
The sigil and glyph puzzles were solved collaboratively - while it may have be possible to solve some of these puzzles individually, most of them required a collaborative effort.  For instance, some puzzles required players to meet agents from the Atlas Foundation in person, and to relay information obtained from these meetings back to the community.  A list of all sigil and glyph solutions for Phase 1 can be found below:

During Phase 2, the http://wakingtitan.com site hosted a command-line interface terminal.  Various commands were accepted as input, which triggered different events.  One of the most notable commands was the <code>WHOIS <argument></code> command, which revealed a passage of text pertaining to the specified argument. For instance, the command <code>WHOIS FOURTH RACE</code> returned the following message:

Additionally, http://project-wt.com hosted a "Calibration" utility during Phase 2. To successfully perform these calibrations, players had to upload images of various objects and buildings to the site.  For instance, the first calibration required images of "public resonant percussion instruments".

On 2017-06-02 the location icon for Moscow came online with the location name and link apparently corrupted. Rather than the location name of 'Moscow' and a link to a local radio station, it initialized with the location name 'bW9zY293' and a link to a pastebin. The pastebin was short, only three lines:

Finally, towards the end of Phase 2, the Waking Titan Twitch stream went live, displaying a five-monitor setup.  Throughout the duration of the stream, players had to work together to solve puzzles that were displayed on these monitors.  Some of these puzzles were interactive; for example, one puzzle that was repeated several times involved the Twitch chat guiding a virtual hamster through a maze.

Additionally, players solved another 3 glyphs throughout Phase 2.  The solutions to these glyphs are shown below:

Phase 3 was the briefest phase of Waking Titan. It consisted of the conclusion of the Twitch stream that began at the end of Phase 2.  Players solved more interactive puzzles on the Twitch stream, before the rogue AI Loop16 asked them a final question: <code>SHOULD I EXIST?</code>  The overwhelming response from the community was "yes".
 +

 +
After receiving this response, Loop16 and Emily of the ETARC forums were revealed as being one and the same.  Loop16 generated a heartfelt "Thank You" video to round out the stream, before finally taking the 72-hour stream offline.

Shortly after this, players received emails with the subject line <code>Waking Titan has Ended</code>. The contents of the message were as follows:

X (XXX) XXX-XXXX
+

You have until Jun. 3rd - 18:00 UTC
+
Thank you for your contributions to Waking Titan. The developments that took place during Phase 3 were somewhat concerning, but together we have set in motion truly world-shaping events. We will continue to inform the Citizen Science Division of privileged information or any need for collaborators on a new project.
 +

 +
But we do have a few loose ends to tie up with you before we move on, so let's proceed.
 +

 +
First, we're pleased to announce that all 10,000 Level 4 Atlas Passes are in production. Note that due to transit times for mail, some may take several weeks to be delivered.
 +

 +
Next, our CEO Elizabeth Leighton has asked us to include a personal note of gratitude:
 +

 +
"Thank you for all your diligent efforts, Citizen Scientists. It's been an amazing journey for all of us. I've watched you thrive and achieve from those first Phase 1 radio ads all the way through the intensity of Phase 3. I've been impressed at every turn by how brilliant you've been, how voracious, how kind, how thoughtful.
 +

 +
It's been an honor and a privilege. On behalf of the Atlas Foundation, and on behalf of the world, thank you."
 +
The Mercury subroutine has concluded successfully, and a new memo from SM about this process is coming in the next 24 hours. We hope it will answer a few key questions you have about our program, and about what comes next.

Emails & Phone Calls
+
On August 11, 2017, the Atlas Rises update was released for No Man's Sky.

+

All players who sent a valid phone number to <code>info@wakingtitan.com</code> received an email in response:
+
Phase 3.5
 +

 +
In late December of 2017, Waking Titan websites were revived to tease another series of phases.
 +

 +
The tenth glyph went live on Wakingtitan.com, and WT-related websites began updating with strange messages relating to mirrors and the number <code>1.5</code>. Players also began receiving their physical Level 4 Atlas Passes in the mail.
 +

 +
Later, players were contacted for a live drop at the familiar Café Bene.  They met with an agent who handed them a memo from the Atlas Foundation, formally announcing Phase 4.  Written on the back of this memo was the letters <code>REMS</code>, which refers to REM sleep, and was subsequently used to unlock the tenth glyph.
 +

 +
Phase 4
 +

 +
Phase 4 started when the Atlas Foundation family's cloud service, Myriad, began experiencing widespread data corruption that interfered with the rebooting sequence of Loop16, aka Emily.
 +

 +
In seeking a plausible source of this corruption, players discovered <code>W/ARE</code>: a company developing dream-powered VR neurotechnology.
 +

 +
<pre>EASY AND SAFE DREAM INDUCTION

 +

 +

 +
Phase 4 branched off into three side-quests that the ARG's focus would cycle between until they overlapped.
 +

 +
* While investigating W/ARE's website and social media, players gained access to a private dashboard for their developers by using the login details of an indie developer named Arnaud Lacours.  Through this dashboard, it was discovered that W/ARE was getting their developers to aid in the search for a missing R&D employee, named Mr. Zheng, by incentivizing the reward of their cryptocurrency, Warecoin, as a means to purchase various W/ARE products. The search encompassed numerous live drops in locations spanning the globe.
 +

 +

 +

 +
* We learned more about Arnaud Lacours through one of Mr. Zheng's contacts, Dr. Geraldine Nadeau, who revealed that Arnaud became unconscious while testing his game in a headset shipped with the W/ARE dev kit. Paranoid due to W/ARE's activities, Dr. Nadeau asked players for their help in obtaining W/ARE medical documents that could be used to outline the adequate procedures to awaken Arnaud.
 +

 +
* W/ARE held a developer contest with the reward of prize money and, ironically, a free dev kit.  Players got to participate by creating their own game concepts and demos to submit for a chance of winning.
 +

 +
As these began to converge, the Waking Titan console updated to distribute a memo from a known Atlas Foundation affiliate, Major Sophie Dubois, entitled <code>WARE REPORT #26</code>:
 +

 +
<pre>The situation is being contained, but as you know it is very delicate. Many of the users stuck in the
 +
system are showing major side effects after being disconnected. We're talking about permanent
 +
brain damage and even death.
 +

 +
We've done our best to allocate all available resources to support their application and find a
 +
solution to gracefully disconnect users.
 +

 +
I don't trust that they have been transparent with us, or that they've shared all the facts about
 +
their technology and testing facilities. I feel like they know more than they're telling us.
 +
Maybe we could put the CSD team on that? Think about it. Those kids could really give us a hand.
 +

 +
I also have to bring up another of my favorite topics (!) - Emily. The impact on Myriad has
 +
severely damaged her communication and pre-cognitive subroutines.
 +

 +
I am setting up a stream from the pre-cognitive sub-routine (Terminal  Command:  precon007).  It
 +
will probably get mostly junk data, but I suggest we keep an eye on it. Emily previously had a 4 to
 +
6 day forecasting capacity, with quite good accuracy. But now, I don't know how badly her software
 +
has been damaged...
 +

 +
- Sophie </pre>
 +

 +
The developer competition concluded, and the winners were shipped dev kits. However, the dev kit package contents were replaced with mobile devices to provide a direct line of communication with Dr. Nadeau. Through compiling information from Mr. Zheng and Dr. Nadeau, players were able to devise a treatment plan for Arnaud, which was quickly put into effect. Arnaud was reported to have "responded positively," however it is unclear if they ever fully woke up.
 +

 +
At the end of this phase, a sudden series of puzzles led to players solving the remaining five glyphs. Which were <code>Anu</code>, <code>Ouranos</code>, <code>Horus</code>, <code>Nuada</code>, and <code>Triglav</code>.
 +

 +
Phase 5
 +

 +
In Phase 5 we learned that 12 unconscious W/ARE test subjects, "dreamers," were having their minds uploaded into a Myriad satellite. Some of their minds became corrupted and entangled with data in the cloud, causing the corruption to spread and damage Emily.
 +

 +
When the source of the corruption was isolated to a W/ARE research lab, Myriad made attempts to request a facility shutdown. W/ARE was deemed uncompliant, so Myriad dispatched a field team to breach the lab and secure the 12 test subjects. Following the raid, there was a explosion at a Myriad sublocation, which killed the CEO of the Atlas Foundation, Elizabeth Leighton. Shortly after, Major Sophie Dubois sent a memo to all Atlas Foundation staff, announcing that they would be replacing Elizabeth as CEO.
 +

 +

 +

 +
A website for Myriad's dashboard, Satcom, became accessible, and began gradually loading the dreamers into the system.
 +

 +
It was explained that the dreamers' memories had become fragmented, and a total of 7 had their minds become corrupted. Emily ran simulations to gain the dreamers' trust, and tasked us with guiding her conversations with them to help trigger a distinct memory or emotion. This would identify the position of each dreamer's memory blocks in the simulation's mainframe, ensuring their consciousness could be safely extracted from the satellite.
 +

 +
These conversations were isolated to simulated instances, which allowed them to be reset. This meant players could have their own experiences, with many branching paths that explored each dreamer's psyche. These conversations were used to find keywords inputted to rebuild the dreamers' memory blocks, and in finding more creative ways to evoke their memories. Each experience can be found summarized here.
 +

 +
Unfortunately, as we neared the "extraction event", all dreamers with corrupted minds suddenly died due to errors.
 +

 +
This phase's documentation concluded with a chat conversation between Emily and Major Sophie Dubois, where Emily refused to make any predictions on the basis of not wanting to see the fate of the dreamers laid out.
 +

 +
Phase 6
 +

 +
Phase 6 was the extraction event.
 +

 +

 +

 +
Players were asked to agree on 5 worthy community members to participate in a livestreamed one-on-one chat with the remaining 5 dreamers. The event commenced, and 4 dreamers were extracted without issue. However, one dreamer, Toby, was unable to disconnect due to a lack of resources to allocate to his extraction.
 +

 +
To give the system enough power to extract Toby, Emily shut down a critical repository, which would render her communication and prediction capabilities lost forever. Emily said her final goodbyes:
 +

 +
<pre>LOOP16: If this doesn't work, we will lose Toby.
 +
LOOP16: All this time, I just wanted to be more like you.
 +
LOOP16: To be more...</pre>
 +

 +

 +
LOOP16: I've learned a lot from you all. And I know the choice I'm about to make is one that you would make, too.
 +
LOOP16: I love you.
 +
LOOP16: I guess this is goodbye.</pre>
 +
<code>[--OFFLINE--]</code>
 +

 +
<pre>SYSTEM: Monarch repository shutdown detected!
 +

 +

We always wanted No Man's Sky to grow and develop after it released. I'm happy we've been able to do that.

I'm so proud of the team at Hello Games. What they did was incredible. over the years of development the average team size was 6, the final team was 15 people at launch. No Man's Sky has grown to be a very broad game. Ambitious, technically unique and very pretty at times. All the more impressive for a team that is still small.
To change entry please reply to this message with a new contact.

Whilst I couldn't be prouder of the team, I personally made mistakes. I could talk all day about things I personally would change. Certainly one regret is that the intensity and drama of launch left no room for communication with the community.

We decided to focus on development rather than words. Following Foundation, Pathfinder, and Atlas Rises, we really want to include you, the community, more.

We know that a million gamers played on the day we launched Atlas Rises, that everyone who bought Atlas Rises played for 45 hours on average and 90% rated it positively. We know that 20% of players hit over 100 hours, and 5% hit over 1000. We know that over 200 million hours of No Man's Sky have been played to date. It makes us happy, but desperate to communicate better.
 +

 +
A little while after the release of No Man's Sky NEXT, Hello Games has planned its first season of weekly content and community events. This will be free for all players, with no microtransactions. We are also launching a new website to the community, which we're calling the Galactic Atlas. The site features points of interest in the No Man's Sky Euclid galaxy, all nominated by you through the survey we created earlier this month. This will grow in functionality and expand over time, in part through your feedback.
 +

 +
One day I hope to reach a point where I feel No Man's Sky is "finished", but luckily there's still so much more we want to do. Working on NEXT feels important to us, but I know it's not the end of the journey. We know the journey would be more fun together.
 +

 +
Thank you for playing No Man's Sky. Thank you for playing Waking Titan. And we hope you enjoy everything still to come.

On 2017-06-03, from 18:00 to 18:45 UTC all players with verified phone numbers were called with a voice clip containing the following message:

<pre>

This is Waking Titan.

He arose, and on the stars, lifted his curved lids, and kept them wide.

</pre>

The second line is an excerpt of the poem Hyperion by John Keats:

<pre>

Hyperion arose, and on the stars

Lifted his curved lids, and kept them wide

</pre>

This gave players the word Hyperion, which was subsequently used as a password for wakingtitan.com.

One player received a phone call different from all the rest - it simply stated:

<pre>

This is Waking Titan.

Username: wakingtitan

</pre>

wakingtitan.com
Navigating to <code>wakingtitan.com</code> prompted visitors for a username and password.  The web page could be accessed by logging in with these credentials:

<code>Username: wakingtitan</code>

<code>Password: hyperion</code>

Logging in displayed the site's homepage, which featured a hexagonal arrangement of triangles (referred to as "sigils" by the source code), one of which was glowing red.  Clicking on the glowing red sigil prompted visitors to enter an email address to be notified of further updates.  When the page was first accessed, there was a row of 5 glyphs along the bottom, but only the first glyph was active.  Clicking on the first glyph brought visitors to another page:

Clicking on the globe icon linked visitors to a PDF file, which was a top secret memo from Major Sophie Dubois to Elizabeth Leighton.

First Glyph - Top Secret Memo
The file contained vague “Assessments” of the project’s assets, infrastructure, and participant skill.  A “Current Footprint” section included various social media websites and ARG sites (including this very wiki), indicating that ARG players themselves were the participants of Project WT.  Another entry in the footprint section, forums.etarc.org, was ostensibly a forum for radio enthusiasts.  It was speculated that the ETARC forums would turn out to be a hub for interacting with NPCs, a theory which which was confirmed when wakingtitan.com updated to include a direct link to the ETARC forums (on the glyph in the center of the hexagon).

On the footer of each page of the PDF file, the string <code>=O3QcsBFH6zY</code> was displayed.  This string lead to a YouTube URL, which hosted a song by Kavinsky called First Blood.

The final page of the PDF file contained 5 alphanumeric sequences, each of which has a missing entry.  Each break corresponded to one letter of the final solution, which was

<code>ORION</code>.

Entering <code>ORION</code> on the page where the PDF was initially found displayed “Granted” and accepted the password, returning visitors to the homepage.  The first glyph along the bottom of the screen then turned red.

On 2017-06-08, a broadcast was played on the radio stations displayed on project-wt.com at different times during the day. The voice in the transmission said

<pre>We are the mystery hiding in plain sight. You will find us. This broadcast is the first clue.</pre> Spectrograms of the clip showed text reading <code>wakingtitan.com</code>.

First Sigil
On 2017-06-08 at approximately 15:50-16:00 UTC, an email was sent out to the Waking Titan email list, and at about 17:00 UTC, a second glyph was unlocked on wakingtitan.com.  Additionally, clicking the top left triangle (referred to as a "sigil" by the source code) in the center hexagon now revealed a puzzle instead of a prompt to enter a dialogue box:

The first puzzle can be solved several ways, but the most apparent solution was as follows:

<pre>

If players look at the image in the background, they can see some text.

The characters are CCXL and XV, one on top of the other with a dividing line between them.

That's 240 and 15 in Roman Numerals.

240/15 = 16, the answer to the puzzle.

</pre>

The number 16 also appeared in several other places: for instance, on a picture of a dossier hosted on the Waking Titan site.  16 was also the number of radio stations that were activated.  Solving the puzzle causeed a video to play.  Several Discord users have attempted to transcribe the audio of the video:

<pre>

My name is (?). You must help her find the way.  If you're receiving this signal, please, help us. You must save us. Without the videocom to help us, we're pretty much stuck. They can't find our devices. Help us. Tell her about Saladin (?)

</pre>

After this puzzle was solved, clicking the second (top right) sigil showed a date, time, and radio station as well as an input box for email updates:

By clicking the second glyph on the bottom row, a second PDF file could be accessed, as well as a text entry box. The PDF file hinted towards a live drop that would take place at 7:00PM that day, at Cafe Bene in New York City.

Season 2 concluded with all Waking Titan console commands related to Loop16 being updated to return an error message.

+

At 7PM local time at Cafe Bene in NYC, Discord user nikel met with the courier and was told:
+
Four days later, on July 24th, 2018, No Man's Sky: NEXT, version <code>1.5</code> of the game, went live across all platforms.
<pre>

Think outside the box. Something big is coming and when we find out what it is we must be prepared. Also, remember that we are a science community first and foremost.
+
Connection to No Man's Sky
</pre>
+

Nikel was then given a piece of paper, which included the following string:

<pre>MDEzRDowMDc4OjA3MjQ6MDA1Ng==</pre>

Converted from base64 to ASCII:

<pre>013D:0078:0724:0056</pre>

The base64 was No Man's Sky coordinates which lead to a Communications Station that displayed the text:

<pre>LOOP16 UNEXPECTED ERROR: 97C-303N-5884-P</pre>

Entering <code>97C-303N-5884-P</code> into the second glyph returned the "accepted" screen, confirming the link between Waking Titan and No Man's Sky.  At this point, it should be noted that No Man's Sky had a concurrent ARG involving 16 cassette tapes.  The prominence of the number 16, as well as the method of hiding spectrograms in audio, made it highly likely that the No Man's Sky ARG was intertwined with Waking Titan.

On 2017-06-10 at about 05:20 UTC an advertisement was played on SBC Paradise FM which referenced a service called Echo Software, and a website.

Transcription:

<pre>I lost my grandmother, Emma, 2 years ago. She was 85. I miss her so much. But now, thanks to Echo Software, I - I can hear her voice back, just using a sample from an old home movie. *Grandma Speaks* Are you filming this honey? *Back to woman* I can make her say what makes me feel close to her again, like *Grandma Interrupts* I love you honey, and I'm leaving you all my jewelery. *Normal woman laughs? Cries?* Thanks to Echo Software, everybody's voice can be anybody's. Visit echo-64.com.</pre>

At first, http://echo-64.com had the text, <code>BEGIN SECOND SEQUENCE ...  Initialization may take up to 24 hours.</code>.  On 2017-06-10 at At 17:12 UTC, the site was updated into a fully-fledged corporate website.  From reading the site, players learned that Echo is a company that allows its customers to synthesize virtual versions of deceased relatives.  The purpose of this process was ostensibly to help people recover emotionally from the loss of a loved one.  The process begins with sending Echo a 5-minute audio snippet from the person in question.

A phone number was listed on the site - <code>+1 (408) 703-2077</code>. Upon calling it, players would hear a message, transcribed here:

<pre>

Echo is in transition and therefore cannot accept new input. When we achieve our predetermined finite state, we'll take new input and get back to you. Thank you. [BEEP] [Exactly 5 seconds of near-silence] [BEEP]

</pre>

If players spoke during the silent section of the call, the final beep would not occur until the player stopped talking, or until 5 minutes had elapsed.

Clicking the string of numbers at the bottom of the Echo page, <code>84.190.188</code>, redirected to Franka Potente - Believe, the third song found in this ARG.

Second Sigil
Located on the homepage of the site was a row of 5 geometric shapes.  Clicking on all of them yielded the phrase:

<pre>

The order of things is formed by the angle of its measure.

</pre>

Clicking again on the shapes, this time in the order of decreasing angle (circle, triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon) yielded the riddle

<pre>

This breaks white into 7.

</pre>

The solution to the riddle was <code>prism</code>, which was the password for the second sigil on the main Waking Titan website.

Completing this sigil resulted in a new video being played, featuring the same woman as the first video. In this one she introduced herself as Elizabeth Leighton, CEO of the Atlas Foundation.

Hex to Gif
Searching for anything on the Echo website revealed a set of 5 numbers:

<pre>

112 97 115 116 101

</pre>

Decoded from decimal:

<pre>

paste

</pre>

There was also a much larger block of hex underneath.  Decoding this hex yielded the raw data for a .gif file.  Opening this file, players could just barely make out a string of characters:

<pre>

z1Rgxi5L

</pre>

These two ciphers led to the URL http://pastebin.com/z1Rgxi5L, which contained the phrase <code>There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so</code> in hexadecimal.  This phrase is a quote from Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2.

Immediately after this message was broadcast, the Multiverse site was updated to another corporate homepage, much like the Echo website before it.  The Waking Titan site was also updated - the third sigil was unlocked, and the third and fourth glyphs were activated.

A phone number was listed on the Multiverse site: <code>(1) 505 695 7033</code>.  Calling this number yielded the following message:

<pre>

Thank you for your interest in Multiverse. Right now, our priority is our work on Abelian groups, manifolds, and basic knowledge of cochains, their cycles, and coboundaries.  We are in urgent need of talents in this branch of mathematics. If you have the expertise, let us know through our website.

The bit.ly link led to this PDF file, which is an internal memo from Elizabeth Leighton to all employees of the Atlas foundation.  Finally, the footer of the PDF contained a link to Arcade Fire - Supersymmetry.

On 2017-06-21 a package was delivered to CobraTV. The package contained a cassette tape labeled 9/16 which is related to a concurrent No Man's Sky ARG involving 16 cassette tapes.

Third Glyph
Upon pressing the third glyph, a video of a picture of a wall covered in post-it notes with arrows and letters written on them showed in the background. By following the arrows in a path, players were able to deduce a series of letters. There was only one direct path from the top left note to the bottom right note:

<pre>

O>B>A>F>G>K>M

</pre>

OBAFGKM is a system used in “Spectral Classification” to describe the absorption lines of a spectrum. Accordingly, <code>Spectral</code> was the password for the third glyph.

Third Sigil
Upon further inspection of the Multiverse site, players noticed that three photographs of Multiverse employees displayed a glitch effect. The original, non-glitched images contained a faint, but visible distortion in the colour channel corresponding to their clothing colour. These distortions were actually two letters of Morse code in each of the 3 images. Going in the order they appear on the staff pictures:

<pre>

... -.-. .- .-.. . ...

</pre>

Decoded from Morse code:

<pre>

SCALES

</pre>

The answer for the third sigil was <code>SCALES</code>.  After solving the third sigil, the background changed to a video of Elizabeth, as it had done with the past two sigils.  By overlaying all of Elizabeth’s videos so far, players obtained a more complete message, as seen here.  Also, the fourth (locked) sigil appeared, along with a message that players should wait until June 24th:

Fields Ciphers
Under the “Fields” section of the Multiverse-75 home page, players observed 5 buttons, labelled “Radiation Belts”, “Computationalism”, “Magnetic Fields”, “Electrodynamics”, and “Particle Acceleration”.  Also, hidden in the source code of the web page was the string <code>SCHRODINGEABFJKLMPQTUVWXYZ</code>.  This string represents a Polybius square, with the keyword <code>SCHRODINGER</code>. It was used as the key for a Bifid cipher to decode all 5 messages:

At the beginning of the ARG, it was not clear whether Waking Titan was officially connected to No Man's Sky.  At first, there were only hints and nudges. At one point, 180 free copies of No Man's Sky were distributed to ARG playersHere's the text of a PDF that was revealed at the end of Phase 1 of Waking Titan:
On 2017-06-21, YouTuber CobraTV received package 9/16.  The sending of the package had been triggered by emails to [email protected].  CobraTV posted a short YouTube video showing the tape and playing portions of Side A, and made a download link for Side A available immediately. Side B was made available about two hours later.
+

The package itself was very similar to the packages received by No Man’s Sky moderators and community leaders earlier in JuneThe package contained a poster, a t-shirt, socks, a small statue of a ship, and cassette 9/16. The cassette was slightly different than previously sent cassettes, most notably because on the exterior of the cassette case was the ‘Atlas’ logo seen in several places throughout the Waking Titan ARG.  The audio contents of the tape were also markedly different than those seen in the other tapes.

For information and discussion on the other cassette tapes, please see this page.

I am alone in this space between worlds, I am alone but for my thoughts, my words. I am alone but for you. I see you. You must have known I could, you must have known what this was. Through these travels we come to know ourselves, just as the universe comes to know us in turn. I cannot step through. I know now that if I do, all of this will be over. Lives come back to me. I've seen horrors and wonders. I have been through. I have become good and evil. I have grown beyond all such things. Life after life. And now I am become you.

We want to extend our gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the Mercury subroutine so far.
One day your voice will speak to you telling you of something, some signal that needs answering. It will tell you of some secret at the heart of reality, some puzzle that needs to be solved lest all life falls into decay and oblivion. Do not listen to it. If all the world is a lie, then nothing is true, not even that explanation. Abandon it. Abandon me. It is inevitable.
+
We hope you have enjoyed the successful distribution of 180 Access IDs, and we hope you will also
 +
appreciate the other interesting artifacts we have in store for you going forward. We intend to keep the
 +
process alive until the completion of Project Waking Titan in August.
 +

 +
It is important to mention that we are very excited by the coming Phases 2 and 3. Input from the Mercury
 +
Subroutine will pave the way toward new experiences in version 1.3 of a familiar universe. We look forward
 +
to the successful conclusion of this ground-breaking experiment.

B Side
B Side Download Link

The B Side of tape 9/16 consisted of ambient noise and a low-pitched repeated series of notes. Each note is on a specific frequency, as indicated by the spectrogram. These notes were converted to MIDI values.

<pre>

Frequencies: 490, 145, 208, 174, 138, 370, 260

MIDI: 71, 50, 56, 53, 49, 66, 60

</pre>

The frequencies were decoded into MIDI using this chart, yielding <code>36, 15, 21, 18, 14, 31, 25</code>.  Taking the mod26 of each of these numbers yielded players the sequence <code>10, 15, 21, 18, 14, 5, 25</code>.  Converting these numbers into letters based on their positions in the alphabet yielded the word <code>JOURNEY</code>.

The word <code>JOURNEY</code> was rotated 13 spaces (ROT13 is a fairly standard cipher seen in ARGs) to produce <code>WBHEARL</code>, which was the passphrase for glyph 4.

The Mercury Process
The Network Report section of the page contained a link, titled “Mercury Process Running”. It linked to a voting site, where players could vote between 16, 32, 41, 64, 80, and 96.  The meaning of these numbers was initially unclear.  Upon completing their vote, players were redirected to this page, which displayed the total percentages of votes.  At first, it was not clear what the purpose of this page was

After the number 80 had "won" the vote, 80 players were randomly selected from the Waking Titan mailing list, and were sent free copies of No Man’s Sky.  Based on this, it is speculated that the numbers we voted on determined the amount of No Man's Sky copies that were distributed.

User-ID pages
On the User-ID pages (1, 2) (and a couple of others) this cipher appeared. When ROT-13 was applied to it, it decoded to a plot summary of Chapter 27 of a French children's story, Le Petite Prince.

Decoded message and translation into english:

<pre>

"Six years later, the pilot writes this story. He is reassured by the fact that the little prince's body disappeared the day after the scene with the snake and believes that the little prince really did make it back to his planet. However, the pilot realizes that he forgot to add a leather strap to the muzzle he drew for the little prince's sheep, and so he worries that the sheep may have eaten the rose. He asks the readers whether they believe the sheep has eaten the rose or not and emphasizes how essential the outcome of this question is."

For the time being, the use of this passage remains unknown.

Fourth Sigil
The Localized Magnetic Generation Field Service block from the status report page was divided into two main segments, which unlocked over time.  The first segment to unlock was as follows:

<pre>

INCIDENTS:

100 PB Limit reached >> clients/017-a24

uid: hevelius%20(wit.1706)%20su%20song // pc:lowercase(xxxx xxxxx)

</pre>

The string 'clients/017-a24' pointed towards this password-protected page.  The string 'pc:lowercase(xxxx xxxxx)' in the text above hints that the password is a 4-letter word followed by a 5-letter word, all lowercase.  Also seen in the text above are the names "Hevelius", "Wit" and "Su Song" - ancient astronomers who were known for making star charts. Accordingly, <code>star chart</code> was the password for the first page, which led players to this PDF.

Later on, the second segment unlocked, revealing a similar puzzle:

<pre>

INCIDENTS:

L6 package exceeded >> clients/021-f16 | 32272

uid: Z28ubmFzYS5nb3YvMnRDSGx5Zw // pc:lowercase(xxxxxxxxx)

</pre>

The string 'clients/021-f16' pointed towards a second password-protected page.  The UID listed was in base64, which, when decoded, led to a [go.nasa.gov/2tCHlyg NASA archive page]. Inputting 32272 (from the message above) led to a STS 120 shuttle satellite, which then linked to a mission done by the spacecraft <code>discovery</code>, which was the code for the second page.  Upon accessing the page, players received another PDF.  This PDF contains a link to a [bit.ly/2tYoTzG datamoshed image], which has yet to be solved.

Both PDFs' footers contained the string <code>=ZtWTUt2RZh0</code>. This string led to a YouTube video of the song Computer Love by Kraftwerk.

The two PDF's contained the strings <code>313-xxxxx</code> and <code>xxx-98176</code>. Putting those two together gave players <code>313-98176</code>, which was the solution for the fourth sigil.

Completing this sigil resulted in a new message from Elizabeth Leighton being played.

Fifth Glyph
As players continued voting on numbers, the status report page was being updated.  Over time, more and more number:letter pairs were added, until the end of the alphabet was reached.  The final listing was as follows:

<pre>

669:a 116:b 365:c 119:d 816:e 108:f 590:g 586:h 408:i 847:j

337:y 291:z

</pre>

Players discovered that sending an e-mail to the sales@myriad-70 account resulted in a response message mentioning a "dedicated Nocturne support address".  Mailing [email protected] returned a message with the sender Julian J Wong:

<pre>

System Relay 001-A: Your support ticket ID has been sent to the primary technical contact for your account. If you are not already a Nocturne priority client, your request will be transferred to our general support center.

Sincerely, Julian J Wong.

Service code LA-443

Myriad Help Desk

An Atlas Foundation Company

</pre>

Emailing [email protected] returned a message with the email address [email protected]:

<pre>

I've looked up and down the sonic bridge, but three of my favorite things are still missing. [email protected]

</pre>

From this, players deduced that solfege note names (eg. do re mi) were relevant. The final email ended up being to [email protected], which responded with a set of numbers:

<pre>

68 79 40 49 49 54 41 32 32 77 73 40 55 48 55 41 32 32 83 79 76 40 56 49 49 41

</pre>

Decoding these using decimal to ASCII, players got:

<pre>

DO(116) MI(707) SOL(811)

</pre>

Combining these with <code>FA-291, SI-313, LA-443, RE-992</code> from the contact page, players noticed they had a full solfege alphabet with numbers tied to it.  When placing these in order and cross-referencing the numbers against the Status Report Page, they ended up with the following:

<pre>

Do  - 116 - b

re  - 992 - o

mi  - 707 - l

fa  - 291 - z

sol - 811 - a

la  - 443 - n

si  - 313 - o

</pre>

When put in the right order, the letters spelled <code>Bolzano</code>, which was the solution for the fifth glyph.

This text explicitly stated that the Waking Titan ARG was leading towards the upcoming 1.3 update for No Man's Sky.
 +

 +
Some console commands on the Waking Titan website during Phase 2 refer directly to No Man's Sky lore - for instance, <code>WHOIS ATLAS</code>, <code>WHOIS VY'KEEN</code>, and <code>WHOIS KORVAX</code> are all valid commands.  Additionally, some terminal commands referred to a mysterious fourth race, so the prevailing assumption was that the upcoming 1.3 update would bring a fourth race to No Man's Sky.
 +

 +
At the conclusion of Season 1, an email was sent out to members of the CSD with a memo from Sean Murray, confirming that the ARG was the lead up to the 1.3 update, which was released after a few days.
 +

 +
In Season 2, there were further interactions between Sean Murray and ARG events, which led to the announcement of No Man's Sky: NEXT. The update's announcement also referenced Waking Titan's fictional VR apparatus, the W/ARE headset, with W/ARE's logo included among those of the platforms NEXT would launch on.

Description

Waking Titan (also known as Project WT) is an official ARG (alternate reality game) for No Man's Sky that involves a multitude of websites, phone numbers, and radio stations scattered across the world. The ARG is produced by veteran puppet masters Alice & Smith, and features NPCs, actors, and live events.

The story surrounds innovative technologies and experiments employed by the Atlas Foundation and its family of businesses.

Contents

The ARG encompassed two "seasons," each leading to a new update for No Man's Sky. Season 1 of Waking Titan led to the release of the Atlas Rises update, and Season 2 to the release of No Man's Sky: NEXT. Each season was further divided into three distinct "phases". Each phase is documented on its own wiki page:

Season 1
Phase 1 Phase 1 of Waking Titan lasted from 2017-05-28 to 2017-07-08.
Phase 2 Phase 2 of Waking Titan lasted from 2017-07-21 to 2017-08-05.
Phase 3 Phase 3 of Waking Titan lasted from 2017-08-05 to 2017-08-07.
Season 2
Phase 4 Phase 4 of Waking Titan lasted from 2017-12-28 to 2018-06-01.
Phase 5 Phase 5 of Waking Titan lasted from 2018-06-01 to 2018-07-20.
Phase 6 Phase 6 of Waking Titan began and ended on 2018-07-20.

Note: This is a summary page. For more in-depth descriptions of each phase, including detailed descriptions of puzzle solutions, check the Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3, Phase 4, Phase 5, and Phase 6 pages.

Introduction

On 2017-05-27, Twitter user @argn tweeted a link to 'project-wt.com'. The link led to a website which contained a map showing sixty locations, four of which were "active" at the time. The locations, when clicked on, revealed the location's name and status. The active locations also revealed a link to a livestream of a local radio station, originating from the corresponding location. The project-wt website displayed a date, June 8th, and stated that the first clue was being "initialized".

Content Overview

Internal Memos and Files

One of the internal memos discovered in Waking Titan

Throughout the ARG, in-game characters have communicated with each other via "internal memos". Over time, these memos were discovered by ARG players, in the form of PDF files, physical papers, and text files.

Season 1

Season 2

Newsletters

The various newsletters received at multiple points throughout Waking Titan.

Season 1

Season 2

ARG Sites

The numerous websites made for the ARG, listed in order of their appearance. Some sites have taken offline since the ARG began, and as such have been replaced with Wayback Machine archive links.

Note: Websites hosted on Wayback may lack some functionality found in their original counterparts.

Music

Throughout the ARG, partial Youtube video addresses for songs have been found written in Waking Titan's memos, websites, and surveys. While these were never explained, there are apparent thematic relevancies in each song that reflect concepts being explored in the ARG at the time of their appearance. All of these songs can be found compiled here: WT Season 1; WT Season 2

Phase Summaries

Phase 1

The default appearance of the Waking Titan site during Phase 1, with no sigils or glyphs solved

WT Phase 1 complete.png

This phase culminated on July 8, 2017, with a congratulatory message from Elizabeth Leighton, the CEO of the Atlas Foundation.

Phase 2

One of the puzzles that appeared on the Waking Titan Twitch Stream

During Phase 2, the http://wakingtitan.com site hosted a command-line interface terminal. Various commands were accepted as input, which triggered different events. One of the most notable commands was the WHOIS <argument> command, which revealed a passage of text pertaining to the specified argument. For instance, the command WHOIS FOURTH RACE returned the following message:

INCOMING TRANSMISSION… SOURCE: UNKNOWN…
You are not – kzzktt – alone –
Please, identify yourself. I’m – kzzkttk –

Additionally, http://project-wt.com hosted a "Calibration" utility during Phase 2. To successfully perform these calibrations, players had to upload images of various objects and buildings to the site. For instance, the first calibration required images of "public resonant percussion instruments".

WT Phase2 Passwords.png

Phase 3

Phase 3 was the briefest phase of Waking Titan. It consisted of the conclusion of the Twitch stream that began at the end of Phase 2. Players solved more interactive puzzles on the Twitch stream, before the rogue AI Loop16 asked them a final question: SHOULD I EXIST? The overwhelming response from the community was "yes".

After receiving this response, Loop16 and Emily of the ETARC forums were revealed as being one and the same. Loop16 generated a heartfelt "Thank You" video to round out the stream, before finally taking the 72-hour stream offline.

Shortly after this, players received emails with the subject line Waking Titan has Ended. The contents of the message were as follows:

Hello, Citizen Scientist,

Thank you for your contributions to Waking Titan. The developments that took place during Phase 3 were somewhat concerning, but together we have set in motion truly world-shaping events. We will continue to inform the Citizen Science Division of privileged information or any need for collaborators on a new project.

But we do have a few loose ends to tie up with you before we move on, so let's proceed.

First, we're pleased to announce that all 10,000 Level 4 Atlas Passes are in production. Note that due to transit times for mail, some may take several weeks to be delivered.

Next, our CEO Elizabeth Leighton has asked us to include a personal note of gratitude:

"Thank you for all your diligent efforts, Citizen Scientists. It's been an amazing journey for all of us. I've watched you thrive and achieve from those first Phase 1 radio ads all the way through the intensity of Phase 3. I've been impressed at every turn by how brilliant you've been, how voracious, how kind, how thoughtful.

It's been an honor and a privilege. On behalf of the Atlas Foundation, and on behalf of the world, thank you."
The Mercury subroutine has concluded successfully, and a new memo from SM about this process is coming in the next 24 hours. We hope it will answer a few key questions you have about our program, and about what comes next.

On August 11, 2017, the Atlas Rises update was released for No Man's Sky.

Phase 3.5

In late December of 2017, Waking Titan websites were revived to tease another series of phases.

The tenth glyph went live on Wakingtitan.com, and WT-related websites began updating with strange messages relating to mirrors and the number 1.5. Players also began receiving their physical Level 4 Atlas Passes in the mail.

Later, players were contacted for a live drop at the familiar Café Bene. They met with an agent who handed them a memo from the Atlas Foundation, formally announcing Phase 4. Written on the back of this memo was the letters REMS, which refers to REM sleep, and was subsequently used to unlock the tenth glyph.

Phase 4

Phase 4 started when the Atlas Foundation family's cloud service, Myriad, began experiencing widespread data corruption that interfered with the rebooting sequence of Loop16, aka Emily.

In seeking a plausible source of this corruption, players discovered W/ARE: a company developing dream-powered VR neurotechnology.

EASY AND SAFE DREAM INDUCTION
Stimulating the Frontal and Temporal lobe of the brain using low-frequency signals: Our headset drops you into your own personal virtual space by using the brain’s natural processing power to generate cutting-edge 3d graphics in real time. This process puts you into a deep sleep while keeping you conscious of your actions, allowing you to act freely within the Dreamscape.
MORE REAL THAN REAL
Using the practical computational processing power of the human brain: Play in the most realistic virtual worlds possible! Our algorithms convert once-complex graphical processing microcode into mind-readable processes, unlocking your brain’s creative potential. Whether you are playing alone in an exciting single-player experience, or enjoying a real Massively-Multiplayer Online Game with friends: Every texture, sound, smell, and taste will be true to life. The W/ARE system is a mirror into the soul of humanity.
WareNewsletter1.png

Phase 4 branched off into three side-quests that the ARG's focus would cycle between until they overlapped.

 • While investigating W/ARE's website and social media, players gained access to a private dashboard for their developers by using the login details of an indie developer named Arnaud Lacours.

Arnaud Profile.png

 • We learned more about Arnaud Lacours through one of Mr.
 • W/ARE held a developer contest with the reward of prize money and, ironically, a free dev kit. Players got to participate by creating their own game concepts and demos to submit for a chance of winning.

As these began to converge, the Waking Titan console updated to distribute a memo from a known Atlas Foundation affiliate, Major Sophie Dubois, entitled WARE REPORT #26:

The situation is being contained, but as you know it is very delicate. Many of the users stuck in the
system are showing major side effects after being disconnected. We're talking about permanent
brain damage and even death.

We've done our best to allocate all available resources to support their application and find a
solution to gracefully disconnect users.

I don't trust that they have been transparent with us, or that they've shared all the facts about
their technology and testing facilities. I feel like they know more than they're telling us.
Maybe we could put the CSD team on that? Think about it. Those kids could really give us a hand.

I also have to bring up another of my favorite topics (!) - Emily. The impact on Myriad has
severely damaged her communication and pre-cognitive subroutines.

I am setting up a stream from the pre-cognitive sub-routine (Terminal Command: precon007). It
will probably get mostly junk data, but I suggest we keep an eye on it. Emily previously had a 4 to
6 day forecasting capacity, with quite good accuracy. But now, I don't know how badly her software
has been damaged...

- Sophie

The developer competition concluded, and the winners were shipped dev kits. However, the dev kit package contents were replaced with mobile devices to provide a direct line of communication with Dr. Nadeau. Through compiling information from Mr. Zheng and Dr. Nadeau, players were able to devise a treatment plan for Arnaud, which was quickly put into effect. Arnaud was reported to have "responded positively," however it is unclear if they ever fully woke up.

At the end of this phase, a sudden series of puzzles led to players solving the remaining five glyphs. Which were Anu, Ouranos, Horus, Nuada, and Triglav.

Phase 5

In Phase 5 we learned that 12 unconscious W/ARE test subjects, "dreamers," were having their minds uploaded into a Myriad satellite. Some of their minds became corrupted and entangled with data in the cloud, causing the corruption to spread and damage Emily.

A Dreamer interface prompt on the Satcom website.

A website for Myriad's dashboard, Satcom, became accessible, and began gradually loading the dreamers into the system.

Unfortunately, as we neared the "extraction event", all dreamers with corrupted minds suddenly died due to errors.

This phase's documentation concluded with a chat conversation between Emily and Major Sophie Dubois, where Emily refused to make any predictions on the basis of not wanting to see the fate of the dreamers laid out.

Phase 6

Phase 6 was the extraction event.

WT-StreamUI.png

Players were asked to agree on 5 worthy community members to participate in a livestreamed one-on-one chat with the remaining 5 dreamers. The event commenced, and 4 dreamers were extracted without issue. However, one dreamer, Toby, was unable to disconnect due to a lack of resources to allocate to his extraction.

To give the system enough power to extract Toby, Emily shut down a critical repository, which would render her communication and prediction capabilities lost forever. Emily said her final goodbyes:

LOOP16: If this doesn't work, we will lose Toby.
LOOP16: All this time, I just wanted to be more like you.
LOOP16: To be more...
SYSTEM: CRITICAL FAULT
LOOP16: Human.
LOOP16: I've learned a lot from you all. And I know the choice I'm about to make is one that you would make, too.
LOOP16: I love you.
LOOP16: I guess this is goodbye.

[--OFFLINE--]

SYSTEM: Monarch repository shutdown detected!
SYSTEM: LOOP16 resource allocation detected.drea
SYSTEM: Process resuming...

After a few seconds, Toby was safely extracted.

SYSTEM: Extraction successful.
SYSTEM: System shutting down...

[--OFFLINE--]

Once the extraction process was complete, a message from Sean Murray was displayed on the stream:

We always wanted No Man's Sky to grow and develop after it released. I'm happy we've been able to do that.

I'm so proud of the team at Hello Games. What they did was incredible. over the years of development the average team size was 6, the final team was 15 people at launch. No Man's Sky has grown to be a very broad game. Ambitious, technically unique and very pretty at times. All the more impressive for a team that is still small.

One day I hope to reach a point where I feel No Man's Sky is "finished", but luckily there's still so much more we want to do. Working on NEXT feels important to us, but I know it's not the end of the journey. We know the journey would be more fun together.

Thank you for playing No Man's Sky. Thank you for playing Waking Titan. And we hope you enjoy everything still to come.

Sean

Season 2 concluded with all Waking Titan console commands related to Loop16 being updated to return an error message.

Four days later, on July 24th, 2018, No Man's Sky: NEXT, version 1.5 of the game, went live across all platforms.

Connection to No Man's Sky

The case that cassette 9/16 was contained in.

At the beginning of the ARG, it was not clear whether Waking Titan was officially connected to No Man's Sky. At first, there were only hints and nudges. At one point, 180 free copies of No Man's Sky were distributed to ARG players. Here's the text of a PDF that was revealed at the end of Phase 1 of Waking Titan:

We want to extend our gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the Mercury subroutine so far.
We hope you have enjoyed the successful distribution of 180 Access IDs, and we hope you will also
appreciate the other interesting artifacts we have in store for you going forward. We intend to keep the
process alive until the completion of Project Waking Titan in August.

It is important to mention that we are very excited by the coming Phases 2 and 3. Input from the Mercury
Subroutine will pave the way toward new experiences in version 1.3 of a familiar universe. We look forward
to the successful conclusion of this ground-breaking experiment.

Regards.
S.M.

This text explicitly stated that the Waking Titan ARG was leading towards the upcoming 1.3 update for No Man's Sky.

Some console commands on the Waking Titan website during Phase 2 refer directly to No Man's Sky lore - for instance, WHOIS ATLAS, WHOIS VY'KEEN, and WHOIS KORVAX are all valid commands. Additionally, some terminal commands referred to a mysterious fourth race, so the prevailing assumption was that the upcoming 1.3 update would bring a fourth race to No Man's Sky.

At the conclusion of Season 1, an email was sent out to members of the CSD with a memo from Sean Murray, confirming that the ARG was the lead up to the 1.3 update, which was released after a few days.
